Advancing International Arbitration in Africa
On October 8, 2024, ALN Academy’s Director, Aisha Abdallah, joined other influential voices at the African Women in Arbitration (AWIA) Symposium in Kampala, Uganda. The symposium’s focus was on a vital theme: “Advancing International Arbitration in Africa: Securing African Seats and Promoting Diversity in Appointments.” This discussion brought together respected practitioners like Ngo-Martins Okonmah, FCIArb, Wachia Kilei, and Edith Twinamatsiko, MCIArb, each contributing valuable insights to the conversation on Africa’s role in the global arbitration landscape.
A key highlight of the symposium was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between African Women in Arbitration and ALN Academy. This agreement symbolizes a new partnership aimed at strengthening Africa’s arbitration capacity and making the field more inclusive.
Together, AWIA and ALN Academy will work toward:
- Expanding opportunities for training African arbitrators
- Promoting diversity and inclusion in arbitrator appointments
- Encouraging collaboration and knowledge-sharing
- Innovating solutions for effective dispute resolution
This partnership is more than just an agreement—it’s a shared commitment to making arbitration in Africa more dynamic and accessible. By combining forces, AWIA and ALN Academy aim to foster an arbitration community that truly reflects Africa’s rich diversity and potential. The future of arbitration in Africa is looking brighter, more inclusive, and ready to take on new challenges!
