It’s a riveting time in the world and in Africa right now. Countries in Europe and the Gulf are facing significant labour shortages whilst Africa is confronting a youth boom.
These two events are occurring simultaneously at a critical time – youth in Africa have little to no jobs and countries in Europe and the Gulf have a plethora of jobs in service such as hospitality, construction, IT services and care work (of course, there are many a political conversation to have on this).
ALN Kenya’s Senior Partner, Karim Anjarwalla deep-dives into these complexities in a recent research article – you should check it out if employment, youth, and economic development are on your mind.
What’s interesting, though, is the idea of the ‘youth-quake’ which refers to disillusionment, disappointment, and apathy amongst youth as a result of being under-utilised. It’s perhaps why one of our highlights this week is on overseas education being a leading pathway for the exit of skilled youth.
Anyway. The rant is over. We hope you enjoy this week’s highlights. For those of us at the Academy, we were equally motivated, unsurprised and saddened at the trends on the continent.
